START First steps Deutsch Ellipsoid : Latitude dependent quantities

All geodetically relevant quantities for a specified latitude of arbitrary type on a chosen reference ellipsoid are computed.

P′ = point on circumscribed sphere
O = geocentre

a = semimajor axis
b = semiminor axis
m = length of meridian arc
ρ = radius of parallel
N = radius of curvature in the prime vertical

φ = ellipsoidal latitude
     (= ellipsoidal latitude)
ψ = geocentric latitude
β = reduced latitude
     (= parametric latitude)
μ = rectified latitude
     (not displayed in the figure)

Did you know? The ellipsoidal normal is rectangular to the ellipsoid at point P
